The Dacha, Sustianable off-grid living in upstate New York
The Dacha
In Russia a dacha (да́ча in russky) was a retreat home, to get away from urban areas and connect to nature.

We are very happy to have a beautiful peice of old technology in our possession. To act as our power-plant during construction and to afford us almost unlimited electricity (for almost free) for work parties/battery charging we are going to utilize this lister diesel generator.

Here is the generator still in its crate.

Its a very old design, this type of generator has been around since 1930. They stopped production in America in the early 1980's. They are still being used in rural parts of America to power small villages/homesteads and farms. Some people report upwards of 20-30,000 hours of near continuous run time between rebuilds! They are so simple in design with so few moving parts they are very easy to maintain.

Our unit is the smallest you can easily buy. It only produces 6 horsepower. With a 3Kwh generator head attached this unit is rated at producing about 3,000 watts of power continuously at full throttle. Consumption is rated at roughly 1 gallon of diesel fuel for 8-9 kilowatts of power produced. That's a lot of power!

Our plans are to convert this generator as soon as possible to waste veggie oil. We are still trying to figure out the best way to do the conversion. It should be operational before heavy construction starts.
