The Dacha
In Russia a dacha (да́ча in russky) was a retreat home, to get away from urban areas and connect to nature.

Our land

After over a year of searching, lively discussion, camping trips, more discussion and the exploration of much of the Northeastern United States, fate brought our group to Ithaca, New York. We had originally been set on siting our homestead in the Adirondacks, an amazing, wild and protected expanse in northern New York. Visiting in the late spring, however, we discovered that the much of the park was still blanketed by several feet of snow. This sort of jogged us, and started us thinking about our ultimate priorities. With the help of a fun graphical chart (which forced us to rank traits of an ideal location), we discovered that we really wanted to be near a cool town, surrounded by nature but not completely isolated from a supportive community. We also wanted a decent growing season.

Here's where Ithaca came in.

For the first time, we really started finding properties that met our strict criteria. In fact, things just seemed to fall together here. Before we knew it, we were looking at our dream land and getting a proposal together.

Our final choice was an oddly shaped bit of land around 12 miles from town, with nothing on it save a long driveway, a couple abandoned fields and a small expanse of woods.

From there, on 16 acres that were actually our own, the real fun began!
