Permaculture Plan – Our Garden Beds
So recently the Dacha has been working on a new permaculture plan, thinking about our Zone 1 and how we can get food closer to the house. In the last few years we noticed that things were growing really well right in front of the windows so we made some new beds.
What started out looking more like Dacha graves, soon took on a better look. Here is our first bed:
Danila picked up some black locust wood – a truck full of odds and ends which made pretty sweet boxes.
Thanks to our visitors, Lauren and Brian, we took a day to cut and put it all together.
This snake was watching us lazily from the pond rocks!
Well, we were goofing off a bit…I mean, we were just measuring the beds to see how comfy they would be…yeah…
As of now, we’ve planted some broccoli, lettuce, kale, more kale, and beets into these babies. More to come as we make room for our many plants, which I can’t wait to eat.

G’Day! Dachaproject,
On a similar note,, I want to start planning now for a permaculture landscape design for my yard next spring. From what I’ve read about permaculture, it sounds like a great concept, but I’m overwhelmed by ph levels, companion planting, planting seeds in hills, blah, blah, blah! I need to do this as frugally as possible and want to do some container gardening to avoid weeds. I want to plant the front and back yards and have it be both attractive and productive. Any advice? Thank you!

Enjoy

Hi Jim,
Yes, permaculture encompasses so much that it can be overwhelming. I think it’s smart to start with what you need most – food that you’re going to eat all the time. I would think about your Zone 1 – the things you want close to your kitchen, and focus on those beds. Raised beds, or containers sound good. We used black locust and built our raised beds, then planted the stuff we always eat right in front of the house, at easy reach. You can also prep spots you want to grow things in by putting down cardboard and mulch so that the weeds don’t even get a head start. Really, you just have to think about your space, and then about what you want from it most. We want food that we can easily tend to and eat. Hope that helps. I ‘ve been reading “The No Work Garden” to see if we can make gardening even easier…but there are a lot of good books to give you ideas.
